Itinerary

Your Batian Peak summit attempt begins before dawn (typically 2-3 AM) from Shipton’s Camp. After a quick breakfast, begin the approach to the base of Batian’s North Face under headlamp, crossing rocky terrain toward the start of technical climbing sections.

The Batian North Face Standard Route begins with approach scrambling, then transitions into technical multi-pitch rock climbing. You’ll navigate steep granite walls, exposed ridges, narrow chimneys, and vertical face climbing. Key sections include the Diamond Couloir approach, multiple rope pitches of Grade IV-V climbing, and the exposed traverse toward Batian’s summit.

Your certified Mount Kenya guides manage all technical rope systems, belay stations, and safety protocols. They assess conditions, pace the climbing appropriately for altitude, and make real-time decisions about route variations based on weather and team performance.

Reaching Batian Peak summit (5,199m), Mount Kenya’s highest point, delivers unmatched views across Kenya’s highlands. You’ll see Nelion’s sharp twin peak beside you, the dramatic Gorges Valley far below, Point Lenana’s distinctive rocky summit, and distant plains stretching toward Nairobi. Summit time on Batian is typically limited to 15-30 minutes depending on weather.

After summit celebrations and photos, begin the technical descent. Depending on route conditions and team capability, descent may retrace the North Face route or traverse via Nelion Peak and the Gate of the Mists. Descend to Austrian Hut (5,000m) for overnight bivouac, or continue further down to Shipton’s Camp if conditions and energy allow.

Climbing Time: 10-14 hours (depending on conditions, team pace, route variations)
Technical Difficulty: Grade IV-V (5.6-5.8 YDS), multi-pitch alpine rock climbing
Altitude Gain: ~1,000m from Shipton’s to Batian summit

Accommodation: Austrian Hut bivouac or Shipton’s Camp

This is the culminating day of your Batian Peak expedition, testing all your mountaineering skills, physical fitness, altitude tolerance, and mental determination. Summit success on Batian represents a significant African mountaineering achievement.

After a safe morning descent or traverse, return to Shipton’s for breakfast or lunch. Continue your journey down through the Mackinder Valley to Old Moses Camp. Take time to relax, reflect, and celebrate your successful summit with your guides.
